A great tribute to a great people, the Tarahumara. I felt as though I was there. To only have that awesome opportunity to first hand experience being with and running with the greatest runners on the planet, as well as the priviledge of first hand living by the side of the Tarahumara and Caballo Blanco.

Sensational! I've already told numerous people about the book- the adventure!

[...] I couldn’t tell who was in the lead for most of the day. What really inspired me however, was noticing that there were several Raramuri women in the race. They were wearing their traditional pleated skirts, even in the marathon. Many of the Raramuri were also wearing huraches, sandals made out of recycled rubber tire treads with leather fastenings. Not surprisingly, most of the gringos favored their expensive, high-tech, running shoes. (Vegabiker: Caballo Blanco – 2009 Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon) [...]

[...] Micah invited me to stay and film the race which would be held the following weekend. He told me about the Tarahumara Indians who come to participate in the race. They call themselves “Raramuri” which means “fast runner” in their language. They are known as being some of the best long distance runners in the world and he organized the race as a way of encouraging them to keep their tradition of running alive. I told Micah that I would consider returning to Urique to film the race, but first I had some exploring to do in the canyons. (Vagabiker: It’s all downhill from here…) [...]

[...] I left Urique a day later than I anticipated. Riding back up the spectacular cliff edge road, the temperature gradually dropped until once again I was at 6,000 feet of elevation in the cool and refreshing pine forests. I went back through Cerocaui, and found roads that took me to San Rafael, where the pavement began again. A short while later I stopped in Divisidero, where the Chihuahaua Pacifico (called the “Chepe”) train stops so that the visitors can get off the train and see a view of the canyon below. The train ride itself is supposed to be quite spectacular as it traverses the canyon country across a number of bridges and through many tunnels. Ironically, the stop at Divisidero is the only place where the train riders can actually see the canyon itself. It only stops for twenty minutes and I witnessed the parade of tourists get off the train, run through the gauntlet of Tarahumara Indians selling their crafts, take a few pictures of the canyon and then get back on the train and leave. I felt like my own experience was the inverse of theirs. While they had been spending all of their time onboard the train, with just twenty minutes to see the actual canyon itself, I had been spending all of my time in the canyon, and had just twenty minutes to see the train.(Vagabiker: Creel, The “Hub” of the Copper Canyon) [...]

Sterling, I just wanted to tell you that I have just discovered your website while doing a google search for the OBDR. I guess I am a little late to the adventure motorcycling lifestyle but I am fascinated by those who have the opportunity to travel by motorcycle. In my own little way I suppose I do get to adventurebike as I ride a KLR 650 100+ miles round trip to work everyday, and I have commited myself to ride as far into winter as I can. Living in NW Alabama, winters are not that bad, but hey, cold is still cold. One day when the boys are grown I hope to take my wife and do the TAT, OBDR, and just riding around finding whatever there is left to find. Anyway you have a new fan in AL. May God bless you and keep you safe on all your travels.

I too just finished the book and really enjoyed it. It made me realize again what a privilege it was to be at the race in Urique and meet Caballo Blanco.

I am almost finished with my documentary about the motorcycle ride to the canyons. The race was the final chapter of a great ride and a great experience. I'll update as soon as the movie is done and share the trailer soon!

I just finished Born to Run. It made me remember why I started running in the first place; I love to just run. I couldnt put the book down, it was so amazing to learn about every person that was spoke about, and it makes you want to run down to those canyons. We need more people in the world like Caballo... to help us not forget that we can run free... :)

Thanks for helping the Tarahumara keep their culture and way of life intact. I just finished "Born to Run"by Chris McDougall. Thanks for making a difference and helping other Caballo Blanco! Maybe some day I will come down for a trail run. I will email you first though. And, don't worry. I don't need babysitting. Been trail running since I was 17. :) A

Thanks for the comment. We made it about 20 miles out of Batopilas on the Mineral Palenque road before we turned around. I felt like I could have went further but it turns out that it was in the "wrong direction" anyways and would not have gotten me to Tubares anyways. The correct road to Tubares from Batopilas was not *that* difficult as it turned out, on my F650.

Wow. You guys tried to take BMWs on the Mineral Polanco Road. There is a loop ride - Yoquivo, jesus Maria Mineral Polanco, Satevo - that begins and ends in Batopilas. It is about 75 miles and takes all day. It has some of the most difficult stretches that I have encountered. I am impressed that you attempted it on those bikes, and impressed as well that you made it from Batopilas to the Urique river and out to Tubares solo on a boxer GS. It has been done on big bikes, but no one has ever reported anything but a lot of difficulty. I tip my hat.

Sterling--Have been eagerly awaiting your most recent posts especially your account of your solo ride from Bato. to Urique. And, thank you for the charitable words regarding my riding skills-the heat, the seat, and the surprise of 37# of pressure in the tires were all contributing factors. However, the clear overriding factor is that I suffer from "El sindrome de Bolanos, la bola de anos que llevo encima." BTW, only the windscreen and the turn signal were victims of my acrobatics. Also, the bags which are toast but did a great job of protecting more essential parts of the bike. My take-away on the day's adventure is "Aunque existe mil maneras de matar la mosca, solo hay una manera de llegar a Tubares."

After safely arriving home via Cd. Guerrero, Madera, Gomez Farias, Buenaventura, Nvo. Casas Grandes, Agua Prieta,...Kevin is off on another trek (pedestrian) down the South Rim, up the North Rim, and then ski out 45 m. All this Grd. Canyon.

Thank you for your companionship and help. Keep the excellent reports coming.

Not sure what you mean by a plan for the video. I just wanted to document my trip as an experiment in creating a bunch of web episodes that were all produced along the way, from the road. In the end I might be able to make some presentations or make a DVD out of it. I've done that before.

Hey Sterling,
Glad to hear your ride is going well...enjoyed your posts on your website.
I met you at Cafe Ole in Loreto and we chatted about bikes & your trip...we have a family home there in Loreto. We flew back to Denver yesterday. I'm working on getting our bikes prepped for a May trip to Canyonlands N.P. and an August trip to ride the Northern half of the Continental Divide Trail.
Let's keep in touch...I'd like to get your perspective on riding Baja when your done with your trip. It sounds like you have done some very interesting motorcycle trips in the past.
My wife and I plan to transition out of our fire dept. jobs in a few years and one option is to run a seasonal business in Baja out of the Loreto or Todos Santos areas. A business catering to the adventure motorcycle crowd would be a fun group of people to work with. After your trip you should have some pretty good insight into riding on the Baja.
I've spent time in Baja since I was a kid and have surfed & sea kayaked all over the peninsula. My concern for setting up a business that caters to motorcyclers is that the roads were possibly too difficult, but that is starting to change and asphalt roads are being added to many points of interest along the peninsula and as you know there are tons of dirt road options. Anyway I'd look forward to chatting with you about your impressions of Baja and the highlights and lows of your trip. Talk to you later and bien suerte con sus viajes. Salud, -Todd
